INSPIRATION: Lightness and humor, Coco Chanel's use of jersey
TOP LOOKS: A floral lace minidress and cape had a boudoir Little Red Riding Hood vibe; the unfinished hem of a blush and sage-gray frock swished with ethereal innocence; a tissue-thin white camisole balanced a billowing long chiffon skirt.
ACCESSORIES: Minimal. Aside from jeweled headpieces with long lace veils on the first few looks, girls walked barefoot and unadorned, aside from their red lips.
WHO WAS THERE: Fashion-scene fixtures like Purple's Olivier Zahm, artist Terence Koh, and actor-jewelry designer Waris Ahluwalia
WHAT WE THOUGHT: This is actress-designer Tara Subkoff's first collection after a recent battle with brain cancer, and she told Harper's Bazaar that her goal is to "see everything a bit lighter and with humor." Tonight's show was nothing if not light, as models sauntered barefoot down the runway in a procession of lace, chiffon, and silk garments, many with rough, unfinished hems.
An AstroTurf runway and melancholy carnival projections warned the audience against too earnest a reading of the nymph-like models. And the virginal whites were turned on their heads by a procession of cigar-smoking men that emerged in what felt like a postcoital victory lap at the show's end. That wink of surprise atoned for some of the more unflattering jersey-knit dresses. Still, overall: Lightness? Check. Humor? Double-check. Subkoff's first outing under the new Imitation label has already accomplished both of her goals.
